If a traditional facelift is too complex, expensive, or high-risk for you, a thread lift can provide similar results without surgery. At The Gael Center in Midtown West Manhattan, New York City, William Gael, MD, performs thread lifts using dissolvable threads to treat sagging jowls, large wrinkles, and other facial features that tend to appear with age. In addition to performing the PDO thread lift for patients, Dr. Gael regularly instructs other physicians on the MINT Lift procedure. Thread Lifts Q & A

What are thread lifts?

A thread lift is a minimally invasive procedure to elevate your facial tissues and reduce some of the combined effects of gravity and aging. Wrinkles and sagging can make you look significantly older or more tired, and you can’t reverse the damage that led to them. Thankfully, however, a thread lift can temporarily improve these features to revitalize your facial appearance.

During a thread lift procedure, Dr. Gael threads thin, dissolvable, often barbed sutures beneath your skin using a hollow needle or cannula. The sutures catch on the underlying tissues. Once they do, he pulls them upward toward your temples to lift the skin and tissues higher than they were before.

The sutures disrupt the tissue beneath your skin, which stimulates a healing response. Collagen grows around the sutures to stabilize the results, and the sutures themselves eventually dissolve within your skin.

How do thread lifts compare to traditional facelifts?

Thread lifts can provide very similar results to traditional facelifts, which involve the surgical manipulation and removal of skin and tissues. Since thread lifts are non-surgical, there are far fewer potential complications. Even though the results aren’t permanent and may not be as drastic, they tend to look more natural and require less recovery time.

Additionally, surgical facelifts require general anesthesia. General anesthesia opens the door for more complications, is very costly, and requires you to find help from another person with aftercare. Thread lifts require local anesthesia, which wears off quickly enough for you to go back to work later the same day if you choose.

It’s important to keep in mind that, while a thread lift may be simpler and more preferable in numerous ways, those over 55 might not benefit very much due to the extent of their age-related skin laxity. The ideal candidate for a thread lift is in their late 30s to early 50s.

Which features can a thread lift improve?

Collagen loss, sun damage, and skin elasticity can all contribute to unfavorable features that you can treat with a thread lift. A thread lift can temporarily reduce:

  • Jowls
  • Sagging cheeks
  • Sagging neck
  • Large wrinkles around the mouth and nose
  • Under-eye bags
  • Forehead wrinkles

Dr. Gael works closely with you to plan your thread lift procedure and address the features you want to target. Typically, the results last for 1-3 years before the continued effects of aging catch up.
